In the book we can read about the adventures of a young captain of the ship “Pharaoh”. The young man’s name is Edmond Morrel. The late captain of the ship died while they were in their journey. Edmond is the new captain of the ship, and one of the sailors doesn’t want him to be the new captain. He makes the police think that Edmond is a spy for napoleon. The police took Edmond to jail. Edmond is taken to the Chateau d’lf and locked up for many years. One day he starts to dig a tunnel through the walls of his cell. Later, he meets a man in the tunnel. The man was also digging a tunnel to escape the prison. Together they dig the rest of the tunnel. The man on the other side of the tunnel talks with Edmond and teaches him very useful information. Later, the man becomes very sick and he is about to die. He gives Edmond a paper before dying. Edmond hides in the corpse’s bag and the guards throw him to the ocean. Edmond escapes and swims to a near boat. He discovers that the paper that the man gave him is a map for a treasure in the island of Monte Cristo.
He goes to the island with one of the sailors, and they find the treasure.
Edmond goes back to his home town. He discovers that the sailor, who had snitched on him, got married with Edmond’s beloved girlfriend, and that Edmond’s father had died. He changes his name, impersonating the Count of Monte Cristo, a very rich and charming noble.
This way, He gets his girlfriend back and they get married after the truth comes out.
