Book Report – Misery/ Stephen King

The assignment: A summary

Part 1 – The plot:
Paul Sheldon, a famous author, drives while a storm is running and gets into a car accident.
Annie Wilkes, an ex-nurse, finds him in his car after the accident. She takes him to her house and takes care of him. After a while Paul wakes up and she starts giving him pain killers, which Paul gets addicted to.
Paul stays in Annie's house for a while, and learns that she is his "number one fan". She read all of his "Misery" books (Paul wrote a serial named "Misery"). When he asks to leave he finds out Annie is mentally-ill and he is her prisoner. Annie horribly abuses Paul, because she hears he is about to kill Misery and finish the serial.
Annie makes Paul to burn his new book and to write a new "Misery" book. He unwillingly agrees and when the book is done, Paul figures a way to escape.

Paul calls Annie to his room and shows her the book. Then he takes a match and start burning the first page of the book. Annie "freaks out" and Paul uses his chance, throws the typing machine to her head, kills her and escapes.

Part 2 – Analysis of two main characters:
I. Paul Sheldon: He is a famous novelist. He got his reputation after writing a book serial called "Misery". On his last book he was about to kill Misery (the star of the books), and finish the serial, so that he could write a new book, which, for him, will be more meaningful than "Misery".
He is very wise, and he figures out ways to escape and/or steal pain killers from Annie. Also he is suspicious – from the beginning he can somehow sense that something is wrong and he should leave as soon as possible.
He is very frightened by Annie. He usually does as she pleases to keep himself out of trouble.
He is judgmental, by the way he – right at the beginning when he first woke up – decides Annie is about to hurt him somehow. This decision is based on the way she smelled, the way she looked at him and talked to him (in other observation you can say he is can diagnose people from the very beginning – after all, he was right with the feeling that something is wrong).
II. Annie Wilkes: She is an ex-nurse, currently living alone. Most of the people in the town she lives in don't visit her, and actually have no contact with her at all. She is unkind, unpleasant to be around; A loner.
She is a strict person. She is described as an ogre.
Towards the end of the book, the readers find out Annie has killed her roommate and during her life she has killed more people that are mentioned as her relatives.
She discovered as mentally ill after Paul finds an album, full of articles. The articles are articles of unsolved murders, which were connected to Annie. In that point of the story, it is obvious that Annie was the killer in those cases
