The red wolf is an endangared animal. His furs color is a combination of cinnamon red, and black to gray colors. It is smaller than the gray wolf, to eighty pounds. They roam in smaller groups than the gray wolfs. Most times a red wolf pack includes an adult pair and their descendants. Wolf adults mate between February and March every year.
Two to three pups are born during April or May. Both males and females help raise their young. When the young are about six months old they are old enough to leave their home. Early this century the red wolfs lived in north Pennsylvania and central of Texas. The red wolves prefer to eat white tailed deer and racoons, but will eat any availble small animal. The red wolf is an endangered animal because in the years of 1900-1920 the red wolf preyed on cattle which land owners own and hunted the red wolves, while the red wolves population declined, coyotes expanded into their territory.
Today the red wolf population is in 300 zoos and captivity centers. Red wolves have been reintruduced at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina.
