Eveline” in images, smells and sounds
The whole story is built on images and smells. Already in the exposition we meet them both: image of “evening invading the avenue” and the odour of dusty cretonne (Heavy fabric, unglazed cotton that keeps odours throughout the years). The picture we get is three-dimensional and full of sensitivity. Dusty cretonne is usually associated with old houses, “grandma’s apartment”. This makes the tune, the motive of he story: Eveline’s life at home is associated with dusty cretonne, while the life outside, life with Frank, is associated with other picture, when they’re together in the port. The picture is projected by this: “She stood among the swaying crowd…” and “…black mass of the boat, lying in beside the quay wall, with illumined portholes.” The reader can even feel the smell of the sea near the dock, of the crowd and the ships. The picture is tragic and frightening by its dark dominating mass, but in comparison with the picture at home it’s dynamic and open.
