Captain Corelli’s Mandolin Louis De Berniéres
The story takes place in Cephallonia, a Greek island. It is between Italy and Greece.
The story takes place at the time of Second World War. The year is 1941.
The main characters are Pelagia, her father Dr Iannis, her fiancé Mandras and Captain Antonio Corelli.
An event, which impressed me most, was when Mandras, a nice fisherman, came from the army. He was so dirty and miserable, that even his mother didn’t recognize him. This event impressed me most because it shows what war is doing to people.
A character, which impressed me most: I didn’t find a character like this because I don’t agree with the characters in this book
I would not recommend this book to people with weak heart. It is a very difficult book. Actually, a book about war cannot be happy and simple. I will recommend this book to people who want to read a great love story set in the tragedy of war. Louis de Berniéres was born in 1954 and has worked as a teacher, mechanic and gardener. In the early 1990s he published three novels set in South America. De Berniéres won prizes for two of these novels but he is the best known for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, published in 1994. The book received excellent reviews but little publicity; it became a bestseller as people read it and recommended it to their friends
